things as they are

by Chloe Mata

I haven't written creatively for a long time. It felt so good to find an outlet, and put words to some of these sights and sounds buried in my head. The writing stems from my time in DC and travels cross country. the combination of shock and normalcy that pervades our daily lives. The title, "Things as They are" is an ending line from a Rudyard Kipling poem. I chose it because it reminds me of the ability to see the small moments, the frozen frames, of our lives, without filter.

In the morning, the televisions click on.
Two screens, side-by-side in an empty waiting room.
Two, unblinking eyes set on the twin towers.

Across the Potomac, a funnel cloud rises.
Monuments, like soldiers, wait anxiously in silence.
Still, no one is moving.

In the heartland, flags are waving as usual.
Old voices on the radio say, 'I told you so.'
Truck backs declare 'The Lord is watching.'

At the drive-in, burgers are served as usual.
Red coke cans litter the pavement.
Desert shrubs stand vigilent against the blue sky.

Along the panhandle, nothing moves as usual.
Tires roll and roll along the flatlands.
A white sky, like thin smoke, is everywhere we go.
