HOW HYPNOTHERAPY CAN HELP
by Nona Passalacqua, C.C.H.T.

The images from September 11, 2001 are deeply imbedded in the mind of our nation. From this trauma many of us have had shock reactions, such as sleep and digestive disturbances, raised blood pressure, diffuse generalized anxiety reaction, depression, chronic tightening of musculature leading to body aches and pains and increased addictive behaviors.

While there are many ways to address these issues, in this case one of the best is the use of hypnotherapy to relieve the deep grief, anger, fear and shock. One reason for this is that the effect of constant repetitive exposure to the disturbing images of September 11th is the induction of hypnotic trance.

So, what is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a naturally occurring "altered state of consciousness". We all experience it while going to our emerging from sleep, when deeply concentrating on something to the exclusion of outer stimuli, such as reading or watching TV and sometimes in extended repetitive action, such as highway driving. It is a state of focused attention.

What is shock?

It is the freezing of the nervous system, the disabling of our ordinary resources, the inability to react. This may seem to pass fairly quickly but the symptoms of shock can linger for a very long time and the resilience of the nervous system be impaired. In other words, we can become anxious, jumpy, over-reactive.

A certified hypnotherapist is a person who is highly trained and skilled to help you enter the hypnotic state of focused attention. He or she can help you use this state to deeply relax and to reacquaint you with your existing resources and skills to assist in recovery from trauma; to change addictive responses to healthy adaptive responses and to unlock and release the bodily and psychic pain caused by the extremely stressful situation gripping our country at this time.
