transitions

by darling g. villena-mata

the night sky is full of stars
and the moon is almost full
the breezes give way to winds
carrying ahead the coldness of the storm
slowly coming inland

i lay down
tired and sleepy
ready to drift into
another world
another state

when suddenly
a memory of you floats
through my body
and my brain is alerted
of the loss.

i find myself wailing
quietly so as not to awaken
another who is sleeping in the other room
who misses you more than i can ever imagine

my body wails
my face contorts into a silent howl
of deep missing
as tears flow down my face
like a river overflowing its banks

my body shakes with
the movement of grief
touching every part of my body
my lungs feel like they will burst
as they expand beyond its normal limits

i gulp and sob

i miss you
i miss our jokes
and humour
i miss your serenity
and patience
your storytelling
your dances
and your nurturing
your rolemodeling

it has been two years and counting
from the day you departed from our lives
and took away the gifts of seeing you smile
of your dances and gaity in our lives.

you were no saint
but certainly an angel
learning to be human and all its frailities, ups and downs
and strengths

i miss you dear Mami Gracielita
my mother
you,
who were the heart of our family
the spirit of humour and grace

as i lay quietly screaming of missing you
i touch my heart
and suddenly feel a peace.

as quickly as the wailing started
it vanishes in long seconds

leaving me your sweet memories
alone
to continue breathing
and living
the legacy you left me

...to be my own writer of my life
