ON THE SPOT
...with Herdomain
To quote Her Domain, it "encourages and supports women who embrace the culture and technology of the Internet as a vehicle for creative and professional pursuits. The women involved in Her Domain meet in real life to find jobs, find employees, compare notes on their respective trades, and learn from each other in an unintimidating environment."
Based out of Austin, Texas in the United States, Herdomain also has a webring or listserv for
women and by women. From "newbies" (those recently entering the fields) to old timers, one finds a cybercommunity that cares not just its membership but for their "real" communities as well. It is not unusual to hear of and see a Herdomainer volunteering her time for a fledgling start-up company or for some charitable organization, such as Girl Start. You will find passionate women who posts anything from tech or computer-oriented questions, such as "my navbar is not linking" to "what does IMG SRC stand for" to "how do you put a website together" to "where do you find a good chiropractor" or carpenter or mechanic. What makes this particular listserv so unique is the membership and the willingness for the group to help each other out when asked. Whether you are just starting out in the world wide web or an old pro wanting to network with other colleagues, Her Domain offers a safe and enjoyable environment where your skills can be improved, post your services, or announce job opportunities, and on the way, make new friends.
Check out their website. You will find information on classes, events, technical links, other women's sites and much more. Herdomain can be visited at http://www.herdomain.org
